Mrs. Kay Wessells Lewis, 81, of Lee Mont, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
Born Jan. 3, 1945, Kay was the daughter of Paige F. Wessells and Beatrice A. Wessells. A proud alumna of Parksley High School, she was always community-minded and a competitive sports machine.
After earning her bachelor’s degree from Longwood College, Kay was an English teacher for seven years.
She then set out on a lifelong mission to help the folks of the Eastern Shore and beyond through her work with Northampton County Department of Social Services and Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. As eligibility supervisor at social services, she passionately promoted her staff to “be all they could be.”
A natural-born leader, Kay served as an Accomack County supervisor, as president of Virginia Benefit Programs Organization (BPRO), as a member of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, as a member of the War Memorial Committee in Parksley, and on the Members Helping Members Committee for A&N Electric.
Always a little feisty and ready for a good competition, Kay was an out-and-out slugger when she played softball. She coached softball and really enjoyed watching or playing all sports, especially basketball and volleyball.
In her down time, she enjoyed getting her hands in the soil and tending to her garden, playing bingo, hanging with her cats, or spending time with her beloved son and granddaughter. But once she got in that red Dodge Charger of hers, all bets were off. Now she’s driving that Charger in the sky (but in an orderly, organized fashion, of course).
Kay is survived by her son, Trent Lewis (Tammy Hill) of Parksley; her granddaughter, Taylor Fisher (Drew Fisher) of Parksley; her great-grandchild, Blaire Fisher; her niece, Melissa Payne; her dear friend, Annie Kay; and many, many friends whom she loved like family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Paige Ann Houston, formerly of Salisbury, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Friday, April 3, at 2 p.m., followed by interment at the Parksley Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
